Special Issue: Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems and Integration
A robust energy system is required due to recent environmental, political, and social concerns. Even though the cost-effectiveness of wind and solar energy cannot be neglected, renewable energy consumption is still limited due to the failure to provide essential infrastructure and technologies to manage the intermittency of the power generation from renewable energy sources.
The intermittency made by renewable energies interrupt the energy system balance and might lead to a considerable pressure on power systems. Using advanced energy technologies including smart grid, energy storage technologies, power-to-gas, and other novel technologies results in having a reliable, stable, and sustainable renewable energy. To achieve this goal, energy infrastructure investments are required to address financial, technological, market, and regulatory risks.
Additionally, hybrid systems based on renewable energies are increasingly used in remote areas which accessing to the main electric grids is hard. They provide a continuous, stable, and safe energy supply in those areas. Hybrid systems founded on solar, wind, biomass, or hydraulic energy encounter challenges related to intermittency and the variability of renewable sources. Energy storage and charge management are among the technology solutions used to increase the penetration of renewable energy.
This Special Issue focuses on recent advances in the policy, design, optimization, operation, and test cases of hybrid renewable energy systems. The issue addresses a wide range of topics, including:
