Abstract:

This paper focuses on the problem of image segmentation . It adresses the inherent deficiencies occurring when extracting low-level features (primitives) and when dealing with the complexity of real scenes . To solve such a problem we propose a framework which integrates several types of primitives formed progressively from complementary image transformations in an iterative and cooperative way. A particular interest has been given to the automatic and unsupervised aspect of the device.

The proposed system combines two concepts. The first one is based on the integration of the information resulting from different segmentation methods . This allows us to take into account the advantages from each of them . The second concept draws itself from active perception by the introduction of a feedback in the system in order to correct and adjust the control parameters of different segmentation methods . The principle of the proposed cooperation introduces a mechanism to check the coherence by making a comparison of the results obtained by the cooperative methods . This last aspect is lacking to most of cooperative approaches that can be found in the literature.

The developed system is composed of two modules . The first is dedicated to the extraction of uniform or weakly textured regions. Its principle is based on an iterative cooperation between two methods : edge detection and region growing . Both methods are iterated with more and more tolerance criteria until they converge towards coherent and stable results . The coherence is achieved by minimising a dissimilarity measure between the contours and the regions . The objective is therefore to provide an optimal solution in the sense of the compatibility between the results of the two segmentations . The second module localises textured regions in order to update and correct the contours extracted at each iteration by the first module . This localisation is based on an automatic classification through multi-thresholding exploiting some mechanisms of visual perception, and on a fusion of multi-thresholded regions minimising a similarity criterion.
